Abibou Kane in our world
During his visits back to Senegal two things stroke his eye. First of all, development policy was still not optimally designed in order to meet local needs. Secondly, it seemed like development aid pursued short-term objectives rather than aimed at sustainable development.
Through his work experience, Mr Abibou Kane has already gained experience in Holland by serving as intermediary between politicians, health practitioners and researchers. The idea of GMA emerged as a result of accumulated experience in various Dutch research institutes in the field of health and environment. The choice of Senegal was evident considering Mr. Abibou Kane is of Senegalese origin himself. Hence, he co-operates with Senegalese government, Universities and non-profit organisations. Civil society might take part in deliberation and decision-making process in order to define local priorities. “Therefore, since the set off the project there is enough support at all levels, which enhance the chances of success for our project. Due to this co-operation partner organisations are given an opportunity to improve the quality of their projects, meet local needs and exchange experiences in order to redevelop the framework of the projects”.
