Welcome the Internet site of the foundation for health and environment in Africa, renewed on, (foundation GMA)

The foundation GMA.will help the health care and to improve the environment in Senegal. On this Internet site you find the activities of the Dutch Senegalese foundation which is supported by several Dutch donors such asPSO,ICCO en NCDO . The foundation GMA works from the idea that local initiatives must be stimulated in the field of study into health care and environment and that different organisations of each other can learn. For this reason the foundation GMA tries local put organisations in contact with the universities in Senegal and in the Netherlands, with the Senegalese government and with donors in the Netherlands.

What can the Foundation GMA mean in Dakar?

The five answers by the Dutch President Joost Ruitenberg

De Nederlandse voorzitter van de Stichting voor Gezondheid en Milieu in Afrika, de professor Joost Ruitenberg. I.I support the Foundation GMA, because I am of convinced that research in the field of health and environment is essential for the health of the inhabitants of Senegal. Research set up on the basis of priorities defined by the Senegalese context and carried out by researchers in Senegal provide the best guarantee for research results to be relevant for the health care in Senegal and the health of the Senegalese population.

II.GMA is important for several stakeholders:
a) recipients of the results of the research, that will say the population in Senegal whether represented or not in health care consumers organisations or other NGOs.
b) the professional workers in the health care
c) the policy makers and politicians in the field of health care and environment
d) the producers of research results (universities and other research institutions)
GMA hopes reach the following in Senegal

III. Generating research results which can benefit the aforementioned stakeholders. Particularly the question of a permanent impact is relevant; reinforcement of the research infrastructure in Senegal

IV. The Netherlands can help in the following ways:

  • by means of financial support through co-financing organisations, such as ICCO
  • through research cooperation aiming to assist in achieving research results (joint research projects, though based on Senegalese priorities) and
  • by being helpful with the capacity building (at the level of individual researchers and at the level of the institutions)


    • V.Through GMA and potential research results The Netherlands can be involved in approaching health care and environment problems in Senegal, which considering the globalisation might also be relevant for The Netherlands. As far is my responsibility is concerned:
  • so far I have been holding the post of the President the governing board of the Foundation GMA at request of Abibou Kane and Henk Smid (Director ZON/MW)
  • as soon as the Foundation becomes an entirely Senegalese Foundation (GMA-S) I intend to be a member of the scientific advisory board.
